One-Way Excellence

Enrique Mora

We all enjoy receiving excellent services, products, treatment; but at times we may fail to provide the same level of effort and not always deliver excellence to others as well.

This “One-Way Excellence” is happening everywhere. The disadvantage of the one-way excellence is that it wears out; some people end up feeling discouraged and may even resent it. That condition would cause the flow of excellence to decay or die.

One way to change this to “All-Ways Excellence” is: to acknowledge that we also could and should perform with excellence to create synergy and enjoy a culture of excellence. In such environment everything works well in favor of everyone. It is a positive competition to see who can do better!

Actually, by focusing on our delivery of excellence at work and in our social lives, we will be activating the “Pygmalion Effect.”

The Pygmalion effect, or Rosenthal effect, is the phenomenon whereby higher expectations lead to an increase in performance. The effect is named after the Greek myth of Pygmalion, a sculptor who fell in love with a statue he had carved.

It is all about applying the basic principle of role-modeling what you would like to see in others’ behavior and performance.

So, keep enjoying Excellence by simply giving it to everyone and in every action!

The more Excellence you can generate, the better satisfaction you will feel. This carries a commitment to continue in that direction and at the same time grows your image, while others feel encouraged to perform better as well. It is a win-win situation as is the case of most good attitudes. On the left column we have several reflections on this and also will welcome your points of view.
