Sanctuary Cities, and now Sanctuary
A sanctuary, in its original meaning, is a
sacred place, such as a shrine. By the use of such places as a haven, by extension the term has
come to be used for any place of safety. This secondary use can be categorized into human
sanctuary, a safe place for humans, such as a political sanctuary; and non-human sanctuary,
such as an animal or plant sanctuary.
"Sanctuary" is a term that has definitely
been abused for political purposes. The term was originally coined to designate areas which would offer
refuge to people who were harassed by groups with different religious beliefs. Another acceptation was for
the people fleeing from places at war.
This is not about racism, but more about classism. We are
born within a race, but choose to belong into a class. Immigrants are separated in different classes of
individuals mainly depending on their attitudes. Even if they come from the same Country or even the same
town, some are good natured and others grow reluctant to behave appropriately and refuse to adopt the rules
What some groups in America now want is to set refuges
for people who are out of the law. In this case “Sanctuary” is the system to Protect and Enable people who
are here illegally.
Two things need to be done to alleviate these situations.
There is a smaller group of people who come here and engage in illegal activities, or abuse our social
benefits; thus they do not benefit our Country and should be permanently
I believe that the great majority of cases are people
with a need and desire to perform work that benefits our Country. Their illegality may be a result of their
ignorance and/or our ineffective Immigration and Naturalization “Service”. The main beneficiaries of those
people’s work are their employers. They are willing to do work that most American people do not want to do.
One solution could be to have them and their employers
pay a fine or a yearly fee, (like the Hondurans and other refugees do), and have them learn the language,
which most of them have neglected to learn even after years of being here. Most of these people though,
simply are not willing to embrace the culture; which can be another reason for them not to belong in
President (elect) Trump has been restless at picking his
team. I hear that Law and Order are a priority and the Immigration system will be strengthened even opposing
the Sanctuaries’ concept. Meanwhile, the proponents and defenders of those Sanctuaries should be personally
responsible for any negative acts that their protégées may inflict on our
